Ashland, February, 2008—For those people who practice meditation and tranquility as a process of life and living, a new center for relaxation has floated into downtown Ashland. Zenwest Floatation Center, at 130 A Street, Suite 2, has emerged as a center to promote health and a balanced life by eluding gravity. A truly new experience to those in the Southern Oregon region.

Zenwest Floatation Center is a new alternative health and meditation experience. Clients spend an hour suspended in a solution of Epsom salt and warm water (93.5 degrees, skin temperature), which is so dense that you float effortlessly. The solution is held in a state of the art free standing unit that is similar in size to a sauna room.

Why Float? The experience improves athletic performance and shortens recovery time for muscles. Floating also strengthens the immune system, alleviates pain and speeds healing. Mental benefits include increased creativity, heightened self-awareness and a simple fast method to an incredibly deep meditative state.

Zenwest Floatation Center is housed in an oasis of peace and tranquility, a relaxing environment, with two floatation units for rent by the hour.

Floatation involves lying on your back on 10 inches of a dense Epsom salt solution. The solution is so dense that you float spontaneously, like a cork, effortlessly, and warmed to skin temperature. The room is insulated against light and sound providing a profoundly restful and stress relieving environment.

The units include a large upright door opening for easy access, internal soft lighting with air switch for easy customer control and built in speakers for optimum sound quality that enhances the floating experience.

In early 1990th I took a couple of times some hour in an isolation tank of a brain studio for mind expansion. It felt like becoming one with the cosm, and I liked it, although it didn't fully satisfy me, since I felt a little lost in the tank. Unfortunately the studio closed its doors already a year later, and there is no other location with isolation tanks nearby.

Although I own some vintage opto-acoustical mind machines, this is not the same, and in my small flat I have no space for a tank.

A year ago on an esoterics convention I found a friend who had a trance suit. The suit covered the whole body and was of very soft bluish latex. The brand name was something with "Orgon" in its name, but I don't remember well the rest. The head was covered by a hood of the same material; it had no eye holes and was inflatable like the rest of the suit. I had 2 times the occasion to try it out for a few hours in his single room flat, and I found this even much more satisfying than the tank. The sensation in this inflated suit on his bed was so wonderful gentle and mellow, where the tank gave only sheer void and emptiness. IMO this experience is far superior to isolation tanks. Another benefit of such a suit versus tank is that it fits in its small plastic container even into the smallest flat. The hood also contained 2 yellow LEDs in front of the eyes, those light shone though its beige inner latex skin; this way the hood could be connected to the cable of a mind machine, but the battery was dead, so I didn't use it. The friend explained that these suits needs to be washed and cared after use and then had to dry for some hours on the bed before putting it back into its box. But it is clearly worth the effort.

The suit was stored rolled up in a bluish plastic container, which was a kind of oval with round ends (between a big pill and a rugby ball) and had the golden brand logo on it. (It may have been something like "Orgon-!Ra", but the 2nd part may also have been foreign characters.) However my friend was a little strange; he seemed to be some kind of cultist, and after he moved to another city, I never heard of him again. Now I want to buy my own trance suit, but which one is best? I already googled for info, but all I found on the web was this FAQ about trance suit use in autism therapy: http://autismforum.net/forums/forum_viewtopic.php?19.1947

Which company makes nowadays the best trance suits?

I could not find a suit company named with "Orgon" - have they gone out of business? :( The closest looking suit to what my friend had is a model by Reactor Rubberwear with integrated mittens, which is ugly black with no feet and has the absurd name "Inflatable Slave bodysuit". But how durable are they? The FAQ does not recommend the company. Is their molded latex material really so much worse than Cocoon? The thing is pretty expensive, and before I pay too much, I look for more opinions. Is there perhaps a cheaper company that makes the same type of trance suits?

Years ago someone emailed me photos of a light pink trance suit variant that matches it even closer than the mentioned Reactor suit. See it in my gallery: http://www.hipgallery.com/photopost2/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=90388

But does anybody know who made it? Or was this specimen completely custom-made?

I am very interested in a a small group of regular practioners as both yoga and floating are a process which we must undergo to reap the full benefits of, though everyone is welcome of course!

I have been dreaming of finding someplace to get a float tank set up here where I live (in Boise, Idaho), since there has not been a place to float here for 12+ years (that I know of). I was thinking a few years ago that it might work well to establish a "float co-op", where a group of people pool resources and purchase a tank, a space to put it, and the needed accouterments (shower, towels, etc). Everyone pays monthly dues to help cover costs, everyone agrees to respect the rules (always shower well beforehand, keep the tank clean, etc.) This would be ideal in many ways:

1) Less cost
2) Most people I know currently have no place to locate a tank @ home
3) Getting to share the float experience with others! Share the love! :)

Of course there are potential downsides, especially if some of the people involved want to bail out, but with a fair contractual agreement much of these risks could be mitigated. There are also some legal risks if someone were to drown or somehow hurt themselves in the tank, but this might be able to be addressed by creating a LLP and/or having everyone sigh legal waivers. I'd want to stick to people I know I could trust, and who are responsible for their own actions. In many ways it would be the same as any other commercial float center, but just not-for-profit.

Has anyone here tried this float co-op idea before?

Any ideas or thoughts?

XICOCO SHAMANIC ARTS

We have the only public Samadhi Floatation Tank in California's Inland Empire region. The Tank is a powerful tool for relaxation, journeying, meditation, manifestation, and self- transformation.

We welcome you to our center at
18791 Van Buren Blvd. #D, Riverside, CA, 92508.
Our phone number is (951) 776-4000.
website: www.xicoco.com

The float tank is a little larger around than a twin sized bed and chest high. It contains 10" of water to which so much epsom salts have been added, that when you get in and lie on your back, you are pushed to the surface so you float like a cork, weightless as an astronaut in space. There is a lightweight door that you can leave open, or if you want to get rid of the distractions of noise and light you can close the door.

You can deal with pain relief, muscle aches, insomnia, creative blocks, career choices, business plans, design problems, rejection, mental chatter, or most important - nothing at all...when you float.

It is sometimes said that the floatation tank is a sensory isolation chamber. The term "sensory deprivation" describes areas of scientific research that consider the effects of reduced environmental stimulation. The words are an unfortunate choice for those of us who are presenting the floating experience as something pleasant, attractive and relaxing. We notice that people run away from us when they hear the possibility of any form of deprivation.

As a result we are careful to point out that the senses are fully operational and in fact, the senses are very pleased to be relieved from the prevalent atmosphere of sensory overload. Stimulus reduction is an accurate description of the tank environment.

Private 1-hour floats available for $45 or save up to $17/session by purchasing a multiple float package. BONUS: Your 9th float is free!

I'm talking about FLOATATION LOCATION at 801 Ocean Front Walk in Venice, California 90291 (310) 255-1905. It's right on the world famous boardwalk, where the beach, the ocean, and the sunset are closer than where you park your car.
I am encouraging my friend Andy to join tribe.net as a great way to bring his tanks and my fellow floating fanatics together. This post is a start in that direction. Looking for both questions, answers, and ideas for FLOATATION LOCATION in Venice and thoughts on how a new floatation center can get exposure for this unique service/product/experience.

I'm still trying to figure out the internal weight capacity and how to adapt the tank to my plans. The square type tank seems to the ideal shape but I think it will need reinforcing. I'm considering two design options: one of them intergrates my bed on top of a somewhat short tank.

For those who have already floated, I'm interested in knowing where and when it was. How did you come to hear about it? What prompted you to do it? Also, what was it like for you and anything else related you'd like to share.

As for myself, my first time was around 1985 in Los Angeles at a place called Altered States (named after the 1980 movie). I went by myself without knowing anything about floating. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Hadn't seen the movie. I just read an advertisement that said something to the effect of 'take a week's vacation in an hour'. There was a buy three get one free offer so I thought I'd go for it.

It was located in an apartment building in West Hollywood. From what I recall, they had placed it in an apartment. The living room was the reception room and they had about three or four other rooms that were converted into float rooms. I greeted warmly and given a thorough and gentle introduction. Then I was shown the room, the tank, and shower area. The carpets were all crusty from the epsom salts.

I showered and got into the tank. It was lovely and warm. I'm not claustrophobic so had no issue with closing the door. It took about 20 minutes - I think - before I trusted the extremely buoyant water to hold my head without concern that my eyes would submerge. When I finally relaxed my neck, that's when the journey began. Having experience with both meditation and psychedelics, I was able to handle the dream-like state with easy and found it very enjoyable. I felt I went places I hadn't been before. At first there were many 'thoughts' about my life. Things I had to do and things I had to say to people. Gratually it all left me and I had a deeply relaxing experience. There was no music, just a very light knock on the door to let me know my time was up.

After the float and shower, I was invited to sit in the comfortable waiting area and explore reading material. I was also encouraged to read about other people's experiences in the journals there and record my own. There were multi-colored pens and pencils for drawing as well. I really did feel completely relaxed and the effect did last for several days afterward.

I went back several times, sometimes with friends. Eventually they closed, I never heard why. Since that time I've floated in other locations around L.A., the Netherlands, the U.K., and Ireland. Of the various places, Altered States was one of the best. I've been in a number of different types of tanks & float rooms and found the Samadhi to be the best. I'll continue to float whenever the opportunity arises.

I presume it's also available at all the usual places, Amazon, etc.
this is really a fabulous book, although a bit on the left-brain side of things. There is an updated forward by Lee Perry of the Samadhi Tank Company and also a newly added chapter at the back (written in 2003) describing Michael's amazing recent story of recovery with the tank after a terrible accident.
When someone is “floating”, they are buoyantly relaxing in a supine position (lying down, face up) in a 12” deep solution of water that is saturated with 364kgs. of Epsom salts. The water is soft and silky to the touch. The floater’s body is fully and evenly supported with the face clear of the surface. Due to the high specific gravity of the solution (ten times more dense and buoyant than sea water), one’s body floats effortlessly and weightlessly on the surface, as if in "zero-gravity”, giving the floater a sensation of total weightlessness in an environment that is both lightproof and soundproof. Due to the air and water being maintained at exactly skin temperature (34.8°C), there is also no sensation of touch. Floating is a calming and deeply relaxing experience. It is the closest thing on Earth to being free from the forces of gravity (in fact, NASA has employed the floatation technique to simulate weightlessness and isolation for space research). For many people, the experience is a genuinely transformative one.

The floatation tank itself is a computer-controlled environmental chamber, insulated from external light, sound and temperature. The chamber is fitted with an underwater stereo sound system, ventilation system, and air-button controls for the tank’s light and comfort control systems. Audio input to the floatation chamber may either be used for enjoyment or for a variety of therapeutic, motivational or training applications. Many people choose complete silence for their floating experience.

The tank has an automated filtration and ultraviolet sterilisation system to keep the water clean and sanitised between each floatation session.

A commercial floatation session lasts about 60 minutes. New floaters receive a comprehensive introduction to floating, after which little or no supervision is required for subsequent sessions. It usually takes about fifteen minutes to enter the first deep stage of relaxation. The remaining 45 minutes of a typical hour-long session seem to pass quickly and effortlessly. Within a few minutes a floating person can reach a depth of relaxation that would otherwise take many years to achieve by classical meditation techniques. While floating, some people contemplate their feelings, some have wonderfully vivid daydreams and insights, some even fall asleep! Music and light are used at the end-of-session to inform the floater that the time is up.

After a session, floaters are advised to sit quietly for a few minutes to reorient themselves. They may be offered journaling or art supplies in the event they are feeling expressive and want to document or communicate their experience.

The floatation tank has been designed to minimize the effects of light, sound, gravity and touch. The reduced sensory input allows the mind and body to naturally take an inward journey towards its own peaceful and undisturbed state. This journey creates new levels of relaxation and awareness. Using floatation, the body and mind become more relaxed - more quickly - than in any other natural state.

Individuals receive several benefits from floating, not the least of which is the dedicated personal time guaranteed by the booking of a private space for just over an hour. The physiological benefits of deep states of pleasant relaxation, freedom from stress, relief from pain and refocusing of the mind are clinically and scientifically documented and experienced by nearly everyone who tries it.

Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that regular use of floatation has many positive effects, including:

• general reduction of anxiety and improved feeling of wellness
• lowering of blood pressure
• assisting the body to cleanse itself of lactic acid and other body wastes
• improving athletic performance
• speeding recuperation after exercise (overworked, strained, or injured muscles and joints)
• relieving pain from injury and ailments such as chronic joint pain (arthritis), and tension headaches
• speeding up the healing/recovery progress of injuries
• relieving “jet-lag” and general fatigue
• increasing energy
• producing relaxation without drowsiness
• increasing physical range-of-motion
• decreasing muscle tonus (tension)
• allowing the mind to learn information more rapidly and comprehensively (accelerated learning)
• improving concentration, memory, and efficiency
• expanding awareness and enhancing mental clarity and focus
• enhancing creativity, and problem solving (and improving the quality of these endeavours)
• deepening meditation and aiding exploration of expanded states of consciousness
• greatly improving addictive/compulsive behaviour modification efforts (such as weight loss/management, quitting smoking, and overcoming alcohol & drug addictions)
• increasing the ease and effectiveness of conquering phobias
• alleviating mental and physical stress
• reducing pregnancy-related tension, increasing awareness of and connection to the baby
• strengthening the immune system
• helping to prevent stress-related disease
• stimulating the healing process of stress-related diseases
• it just feels good!

And all without undesirable side-effects.

These and many other measurable effects continue long after one leaves the tank. The body, mind, and spirit feel refreshed for days and weeks afterward. The effects are cumulative. The more frequently people float and discover these benefits, the more they enjoy it.
